Stereoscopy (also called stereoscopic or 3-D imaging) refers to a technique for creating or enhancing the illusion of depth in an image by presenting two offset images separately to the left and right eye of the viewer. Both of these 2-D offset images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of 3-D depth.
Images using Stereoscopic 3D effect are termed as Anaglyph images which when viewed with stereoscopic glasses gives a 3d depth effect.
In this tutorial I will Show you the technique of creating Stereoscopic 3D effect in Adobe Photoshop using some basic concepts. I am also providing a “Stereoscopic 3D Effect” Photoshop Action to get the stereoscopic result in just few clicks.
Software: Adobe Photoshop
Here is the final output which we will be getting:
I am using famous Avatar movie image here. You can take any image.
Open the Image in Photoshop. Unlock the background layer and rename it to “Image”.
Create two duplicate copies of the original images and name them as “Image- Red Adjustment” and “Image- Blue/Green Adjustment” respectively.
Select the “Image- Blue/Green Adjustment” layer and open Levels by going to Image>Adjustments>Levels or press Ctrl+L shortcut
From the Channels select Red and move the middle pointer to the extreme right.
This way all the Red tones will be taken away from the image.
Now select “Image- Red Adjustment” layer and open levels again by going to Image>Adjustments>Levels or press Ctrl+L shortcut.
This time we will remove Green and Blue tones from the image.
In Channels Select Green and movie the middle pointer to extreme right. Now again in Channels list select Blue and again move the middle to extreme right.
Select both the Adjustment layers and give the blending mode to Screen also turn off eye of the original Image layer. You may find that it looks like an original image only until you follow the next step.
With the “Image- Red Adjustment” layer selected move the layer slightly towards the Left using the move tool. And see the effect coming out.
And we get the Stereoscopic 3D Effect.
